The winery opened its new facility and tasting room in 2008, several years after planting its first grapes in 2000. Jean and Paul Groben, along with their son Mason, have developed a family hobby into a business that produces many excellent wines. Jasper’s wines have received many positive reviews, including commendations in Wine Spectator and The New York Times. Visit the winery Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. or Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Enjoy free tastings of Jasper’s entire selection of wines, and call ahead to ask for a tour of the winery’s facilities.
Summerset Winery, just outside of Des Moines in Indianola, offers many flavorful wines that appeal to both experienced wine connoisseurs and beginning tasters alike. You can take in the winery’s tastings and other activities, including Sunday Tunes featuring top Midwest bands, for a nominal cover charge. The tasting bar operates from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, with Saturday hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The tasting bar is also open Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Nestled in the heart of Iowa wine country is Madison County Winery in St. Charles, Iowa. It is a short drive from Des Moines and features a resident brewery, Twisted Vine. Madison County Winery offers an indoor tasting room and an outdoor seating area with a warm fire pit. You can find reds, whites and blush wines that hold appeal for just about any palate. MCW is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
